HISTORY:

Mabolo church traces its origins to the town called Talamban, now part of Cebu City. Talamban became a town in 1600. A chapel was built there under the patronage of San José.

In 1850, Talamban (Mabolo) became an independent parish. That year a new church of wood on a masonry base was built. A convent of wood and stone in 1866 but together with the church was badly damaged by a typhoon in 1877 and an earthquake in 1882.

The present convento traces to the 1866 structure but the church has been rebuilt and the facade altered. The present church combines Neo-gothic and Classical elements.

The coming 2016 & 2021 are grace-filled years for the City of Cebu. Held in different cities around the world, the International Eucharistic Congress (IEC), a quadrennial event in the Catholic Church reflecting on the mystery of the Eucharist is coming to Cebu as the host city this 2016.

We are also looking towards 2021, 7 years from now. This will be the 500th Anniversary of the 1st coming of the Christian faith to our shores. We are proud of this event especially Cebu again would be the center of the celebration.

We see these occasions as signs of our being chosen as God’s people. Like St. Paul we can sing: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavens.” (Eph 1: 3-4)

As a way of being part of these two momentous years for our city, we are preparing our Church, the St. Joseph the Patriarch in Mabolo for this Year of Grace and Historic Occasion. Thus, we have commenced the Mabolo 2016 Renovation Project, a P15 Million Philippine Peso Project which consists of improving the structure and beauty of our church building and parish surroundings.
