San Roque Parish
Location: Asturias, Cebu
Titular: San Roque
Contact number: 4649081
The parish of San Roque in Asturias was established in May 9, 1885 (Redondo, 1886: 169). The first parish priest was Fr. Jose Lofranco, who served from 1885 to 1903 (Yap, et al., 1981:46). The present cement church was built during the Commonwealth era and shows the influence of the federal style in its architecture. Most notable are the tall columns on the facade. Nothing remains of the original one, which was made of timber and tabique pampango. That structure most probably fell prey to the elements as it was quite flimsy.
Fr. Felipe Jumao-as, who served the parish from 1949 to 1952, built the convent made of wood. It is situated a little distance to the right of the church within the stone walls that surround the church compound. Sometime in late 1990’s, Fr. Jaime Borces planted a small grove of Mahogany trees nearby. The trees have now grown tall and lush, providing shade on the left side of the church compound and contributes to a very cool atmosphere within. Beyond this grove is the convent, which is a bungalow type structure and clearly modern. (LEA/EC)
